Treasure Coast Coastal Enclave

About Hobe Sound, FL

Welcome to Hobe Sound, an unincorporated Treasure Coast community in Martin County framed by Atlantic beaches, the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, and Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

Hobe Sound is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southern Martin County, Florida, along the Treasure Coast roughly midway between Stuart to the north and Jupiter to the south. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon to the east and Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike to the west, it occupies a narrow coastal strip known for its beaches, natural preserves, and deliberately low-key, old-Florida character. The community's defining feature is its natural setting. The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, established on land donated by the Reed family in the late 1960s, protects more than 1,000 acres on both sides of the Indian River Lagoon and provides nesting habitat for sea turtles and the endangered Florida scrub-jay. Immediately to the north, Jonathan Dickinson State Park preserves one of the region's largest tracts of pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub, mangroves, and river swamp along the Loxahatchee River. These public lands give Hobe Sound an unusually rural, nature-centered atmosphere for a coastal South Florida community. The residential character is a mix of modest older Florida neighborhoods, gated communities such as The Medalist, Loblolly, and Heritage Ridge, and, immediately to the east across the Intracoastal Waterway, the exclusive barrier island of Jupiter Island. The population is relatively small, with a median age around the mid-50s that reflects a substantial share of retirees and seasonal residents, alongside working families and commuters. Daily life in Hobe Sound is quieter than in neighboring Jupiter, which offers more concentrated shopping, dining, and entertainment a short drive south. Most employment is in retail, services, and nearby Stuart and Jupiter, with U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 95 forming the principal commuting corridors. Hobe Sound appeals to those seeking proximity to the Atlantic, generous open space, and a slower coastal pace within reach of the amenities and airports of the broader Treasure Coast and Palm Beach County.

City Guide

About Hobe Sound

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Hobe Sound spans a wide range, from modest older single-family homes and townhomes near U.S. Route 1 to gated, golf-oriented communities such as The Medalist and Loblolly and newer subdivisions like Lost Lake and The Arbors. Along the Intracoastal Waterway and on the barrier island of Jupiter Island, large waterfront estates and oceanfront properties define the upper end of the market. The community's unincorporated status and abundant conservation land limit dense redevelopment, preserving a lower-density, landscaped character. Overall, Hobe Sound offers a broader mix of older Florida housing and newer gated communities than the more uniform planned developments found in some neighboring South Florida towns.

Neighborhoods

Popular Hobe Sound neighborhoods include The Medalist, a gated golf community; Loblolly, a larger residential community with a mix of home styles; and Heritage Ridge, The Arbors, Osprey Cove, and Zeus Park, which offer single-family homes and townhomes. Jupiter Island, the narrow barrier island immediately east across the Intracoastal Waterway, is one of the wealthiest coastal enclaves in the nation and is closely associated with Hobe Sound. Along the mainland, older, established streets near the coast reflect the area's prewar and mid-century history, while newer gated developments cluster inland toward the highway corridor.

Lifestyle in Hobe Sound

Hobe Sound is defined by a quiet, outdoors-oriented coastal lifestyle. Beach access, the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, and Jonathan Dickinson State Park put kayaking, fishing, hiking, and birding at the center of local life. The commercial scene is modest, with neighborhood shops and restaurants along U.S. Route 1 and the Dixie Highway corridor, while Jupiter and Stuart supply larger dining, shopping, and entertainment options nearby. The community's low density, conservation lands, and relaxed pace attract retirees, nature enthusiasts, and families seeking a more reserved alternative to the busier hubs to the north and south.

Schools & Education

Hobe Sound is served by the Martin County School District, which operates schools throughout the county, including Hobe Sound Elementary within the community. Students continue on to middle and high schools in the Stuart area, with bus service across the district. Martin County schools are generally well regarded, though many Hobe Sound households are retirees or seasonal residents without school-age children. Families considering the area weigh the small, community-based elementary setting against the longer secondary-school commutes to Stuart, and some also consider private options in the broader Martin County and northern Palm Beach County area.

Getting Around

Hobe Sound sits between two major corridors: U.S. Route 1, which runs north–south along the coast through Stuart and Jupiter, and Interstate 95 with a junction at the Florida Turnpike to the west. Commutes to Stuart take roughly 15 to 20 minutes, while Jupiter is about the same distance south and West Palm Beach roughly 30 miles beyond. Martin County's Community Coach provides paratransit and some fixed-route service, and the closest Tri-Rail commuter rail station is in Mangonia Park to the south, with connecting service to Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. The Florida East Coast Railway freight line also passes through the community.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Hobe Sound centers on its protected natural lands. The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge safeguards oceanfront beach and lagoon habitat, including sea turtle nesting grounds and Florida scrub-jay territory, while Jonathan Dickinson State Park offers camping, canoeing, and miles of trails through pine flatwoods, scrub, and river swamps along the Loxahatchee River. The Atlantic beaches and the Intracoastal Waterway support swimming, fishing, boating, and paddling, and the nearby Loxahatchee River provides kayaking and paddleboarding. Golf courses, including The Medalist, add a private-club dimension to the area's outdoor offerings.
