Four-County Lake Community

Farms & Ranches in Melrose, FL

Welcome to Melrose, a four-county north Florida lake community built around Santa Fe Lake, just east of Gainesville.

Melrose is an unincorporated community in north-central Florida that, unusually, spans portions of four counties: Alachua, Bradford, Clay, and Putnam. It lies on State Road 26, about 17 miles east of Gainesville and roughly 50 miles southwest of Jacksonville, in a rural belt of lakes, pine woods, and rolling sandhills. The community is home to roughly 6,700 residents, though its population swells on weekends and in summer as lakehouse owners and visitors arrive. Water is central to Melrose's identity. The community is built around a chain of clear lakes, most prominently Lake Santa Fe and Lake Geneva, along with a number of smaller lakes. These anchor the area's recreation and its real estate, with fishing for bass and other species, boating, kayaking, and swimming among the most common pastimes. The lakes' relatively clear water sets them apart from many other North Florida lakes and has made Melrose a long-standing destination for lakefront living. Melrose grew in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a lakeside settlement and farming community, and its identity has long been tied to Lake Santa Fe's recreational appeal. In the twentieth century the lakes became popular with vacationers from Gainesville and Jacksonville, establishing the pattern of seasonal lakehouse ownership that continues today. The community's lack of a single municipal government has helped preserve its informal, small-town character. Because it spans four counties, Melrose has no single municipal government, and public services and school assignments depend on the county of residence, with Putnam County Schools serving much of the community. The Melrose Public Library holds local significance as the first full-service library branch in Putnam County. For those who value lakefront living in a quiet rural setting, with Gainesville's university, medical, and cultural amenities a short drive away, Melrose offers a distinctive and enduring appeal.
